To move files between Google Drive and Dropbox, connect Google Drive in the Whimsy desktop app and add Dropbox; Whimsy moves files between them for you, with no manual download-and-re-upload. Your Google Drive sign-in stays on your own machine, so your files and credentials never pass through Whimsy's servers. Cloud-first pairs — Dropbox, OneDrive, S3 — move byte-direct between the providers, in either direction.
Plate 01·How it works
Move files directly between your clouds.
- Frame 01
Google Drive connects on your machine
Connect Google Drive in the Whimsy desktop app — your Drive sign-in stays on your own computer and never reaches Whimsy's servers. From there, move files into Dropbox with no manual download-and-re-upload.
- Frame 02
Your files never touch our servers
Whimsy never sees your files or your logins. The desktop app moves files between your accounts; for cloud-first providers the bytes go straight between Dropbox, OneDrive, and S3 — never staged on a third-party server.
- Frame 03
Checksum-verified and resumable
Every transfer is verified by checksum and resumes where it left off, so a 500 GB move between Drive and Dropbox completes correctly even if the connection drops.
A private MultCloud alternative
The same job, without a web service holding your files.
Most “transfer files between clouds” tools are web services that temporarily stage your files on their own servers and cap how much you can move per month. Whimsy is desktop-native and moves files directly between your accounts — Dropbox to OneDrive, Drive to Dropbox, any direction — so big migrations finish without a middleman seeing your data.
Any connected pair, in either direction.
Plate 02·Side by side
Cloud-to-cloud transfer, compared.
Web services stage your files on their servers and cap monthly transfers. Whimsy moves direct between accounts — no middleman, no cap.
Another web transfer service with monthly limits and server staging. Whimsy is desktop-native, checksum-verified, and your files never touch our servers.
Slow, bandwidth-heavy, and prone to errors. Whimsy runs cloud-to-cloud through the providers' APIs — nothing downloads to your computer.

Questions, answered
- How do I transfer files between Google Drive and Dropbox without downloading?
- Connect Google Drive in the Whimsy desktop app, add Dropbox, and Whimsy moves files between them for you — no manual download-and-re-upload. Your Google Drive sign-in stays on your own machine, so your files and credentials never pass through Whimsy's servers.
- Do my files pass through Whimsy's servers?
- No. With the desktop app the transfer runs on your own machine, and your files never touch our servers. For cloud-first providers like Dropbox, OneDrive, and S3, moves run byte-direct between the providers.
- Can I move files from Dropbox to OneDrive, or any other pair?
- Yes — any connected pair, in either direction. Cloud-first providers (Dropbox, OneDrive, S3, and more) connect in the web app or the desktop app; Google Drive connects through the desktop app.
- Will moving files break my sharing links?
- A move copies the file to the new provider; any existing share link stays with the original until you remove it, so nothing breaks mid-transfer. You decide when to retire the old copy.
- Are big transfers reliable?
- Transfers are checksum-verified and resumable, so a 500 GB move completes correctly and picks up where it left off if the connection drops.
- Is this a MultCloud alternative?
- Yes — the same cloud-to-cloud transfer job, but your files move between your own accounts via the desktop app, or byte-direct between providers, instead of being staged on a third-party server.
- Does it route the transfer through my home internet?
- For cloud-first pairs like Dropbox, OneDrive, and S3, the move happens between the providers directly, so you're not pushing bytes up and down your own connection. Google Drive transfers run through the desktop app on your machine — and even then your data never touches Whimsy's servers.
- Is it free?
- It's free to connect your clouds and run transfers while we're in early access.
