4 measures
Whimsy is a hybrid catalog: it walks your external drives, NAS, local folders, and cloud buckets from a single desktop app, and builds one lightweight, searchable index that lives on your machine — not on someone else's server. The index stores filenames, paths, metadata, and thumbnails; it never downloads your files, never stages data on external infrastructure, and never uploads a byte of your archive. Scan a source once, then search across all of them — even when a drive is unplugged — from any browser or your desktop. Unlike local-only tools (Offline Files, WinCatalog, catcli), the catalog is shareable; unlike cloud-only indexers, your files never leave your machine.
Plate 01·How it works
Search the catalog, not the drive.
- Frame 01
Find files even when the drive is disconnected
Whimsy catalogs each drive once, then you search the catalog — not the disk. Filenames, paths, metadata, and thumbnails stay searchable even when the drive is unplugged and sitting in a drawer.
- Frame 02
Every drive and cloud, one index
Point it at each external, NAS, and cloud account; it builds one local index across all of them. Search everything at once instead of plugging in disks one by one to hunt for a file. Zero volume restrictions — index local folders, network shares, physical disks, or cloud buckets with the same unified engine.
- Frame 03
No cloud, no uploads
The catalog is built and stored on your machine. It reads metadata and makes thumbnails locally, so cataloging a private archive never sends a byte anywhere.
Built for media archives
For footage and photos spread across a wall of externals.
Videographers and photographers end up with archives spread over a dozen drives. Whimsy catalogs them once and lets you find files in seconds — connected or not — and because it supports content and visual search, you can find shots even when filenames are nonsense and there are no tags. It's the offline drive cataloger that also de-dupes and backs up your archive, in one app.
Filenames · paths · metadata · thumbnails — all browseable offline.
Smart Scan Boundaries
Whimsy ships with native skip-logic for the heavy bundles that freeze other catalogers — monolithic library packages like .quanta,.photoslibrary,.musiclibrary, and development workspaces. It indexes massive collections instantly instead of drilling into a single database for three days.
Non-blocking UI
Browse and search existing catalogs seamlessly even while a massive multi-terabyte scan runs in the background. The indexer runs asynchronously — the catalog stays fully queryable, and your machine never feels the cataloger is in the room.
Plate 02·Side by side
A modern alternative to NeoFinder and DiskCatalogMaker.
Indexes drives, but each one stays its own silo. Whimsy catalogs clouds and drives together in one search.
Filename and metadata only. Whimsy adds photo content search — find shots even with no tags.
Vanishes the moment a drive unplugs. Whimsy keeps the catalog searchable when the disk is in a drawer.

Questions, answered
- How do I search files on a drive that isn't plugged in?
- Whimsy's desktop app catalogs each drive once; afterward you search the catalog — filenames, paths, metadata, and thumbnails — even when the drive is unplugged. It tells you which drive a file lives on, so you only reach for the disk you actually need.
- Can I catalog multiple external hard drives in one place?
- Yes. Point the connector at each drive and it builds one local index across all of them — and your clouds — so you search everything at once instead of plugging in disks one by one.
- Does it upload my files to catalog them?
- No. The catalog is built and stored on your machine — no cloud, no uploads. It reads metadata and makes thumbnails locally, so cataloging a private archive never sends it anywhere.
- How is this different from NeoFinder, DiskCatalogMaker, or WinCatalog?
- Same offline-catalog idea, but Whimsy catalogs your clouds and drives together, adds content and visual search, and ties into backup and dedup — and it's free while we're in early access.
- When do I need to rescan a drive?
- Rescan a drive after you've added or changed a lot of files on it. Whimsy updates the catalog and keeps the offline records for any drive that's currently disconnected, so the rest of your archive stays searchable.
- Can I search by what's in a photo, not just the filename?
- Yes — the catalog supports content and visual search, so you can find shots even when filenames are nonsense and there are no tags.
- Will it work for video archives spread across many drives?
- Yes. It's built for large media libraries spread over many externals — catalog them once and find footage in seconds, whether the drive is connected or sitting in a drawer.
- Is it free?
- Cataloging and search run in the free Whimsy Local desktop app — no account — while we're in early access.
