To migrate between clouds with Whimsy, connect both providers, choose what to move, and start or schedule a transfer. Files move byte-direct — server-to-server, checksum-verified, and resumable — so a multi-terabyte migration runs unattended in the background and finishes overnight, without downloading, re-uploading, or locking you into anyone's platform.
Plate 01·How it works
Migrate in three steps.
- Frame 01
Connect both clouds
Sign in to the provider you're leaving and the one you're moving to — Dropbox, OneDrive, S3, Backblaze, and more — plus any drives. It takes a minute.
- Frame 02
Pick what to move
Choose a folder or your whole library. Whimsy moves it byte-direct between the two providers — nothing downloads to your computer or routes through your bandwidth.
- Frame 03
Schedule it — wake up migrated
Start it now or set it to run overnight. The transfer runs server-side in the background, so you can close the lid and find it finished in the morning.
Marginalia
Migrating clouds shouldn't take a week.
The usual way to move providers is brutal: download terabytes to a laptop, wait days, re-upload all of it, and pray nothing corrupts halfway. So people stay put on storage they've outgrown or overpay for, because switching feels like a project. It shouldn't — the files just need to move from one account to another, and that can happen in the background while you do literally anything else.
Start before bed. Find it finished in the morning.
Plate 02·Side by side
The easy way to move between clouds.
The classic way is brutal — terabytes through your laptop, days of waiting, praying nothing corrupts. Whimsy moves files byte-direct, server-side.
Byte-direct but no checksum verification and no native resumption. Whimsy is verified, resumable, and also de-dupes, backs up, and delivers.
Powerful and verified, but command-line only. Whimsy does the same byte-direct, resumable moves without a terminal.

Questions, answered
- How do I migrate from Google Drive to Dropbox (or any other cloud)?
- Connect both accounts to Whimsy, pick the folders to move, and start a transfer. For cloud-first pairs — Dropbox, OneDrive, S3, Backblaze, and more — files move byte-direct from one provider to the other, no downloading and re-uploading, in any direction. Google Drive connects through the Whimsy desktop app, so a Drive migration runs on your own machine, with your files and logins never touching Whimsy's servers.
- Do I have to leave my computer on during the migration?
- No. Transfers run server-side in the background, so once you start one you can close the tab or shut your laptop — the migration keeps running and is waiting for you when you're back.
- Can I schedule a migration to run overnight?
- Yes. Schedule a copy to run on a timer — including a nightly preset — so a big move happens while you sleep and you wake up migrated, without tying up your day or your bandwidth.
- How long does a cloud migration take?
- It depends on how much data and the providers' speeds, but because transfers run byte-direct and server-side, even a multi-terabyte move runs unattended in the background — most people start it and let it finish overnight.
- Is the migration safe — could files be lost or corrupted?
- Every transfer is checksum-verified and resumable, so files are confirmed intact at the destination and an interruption picks up where it left off rather than starting over.
- Will my old sharing links keep working after I migrate?
- Links from the old provider don't carry over — that's true of any migration. But you re-share in seconds from the new home, or skip provider links entirely and send a branded Whimsy delivery link instead.
- Does migrating between clouds cost money?
- It can, depending on the source provider's egress (download) pricing — but you avoid paying twice to download and re-upload, and you never spend your own bandwidth, because the transfer streams directly between the two services.
- Can I migrate to cheaper storage to cut my bill?
- Yes. Connect cheaper object storage like Backblaze B2, Wasabi, or Cloudflare R2 and move your archive there — then keep browsing and searching it through Whimsy exactly like before, at a fraction of the cost.
- Do I get locked in to Whimsy?
- No. Your files stay in your own accounts the whole time. Whimsy just moves and manages them, so you can switch providers — or leave Whimsy — without your data being held hostage.
