    What is the Ontario Mathematics Proficiency Test?

    The Ontario Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) is a mandatory examination every teacher candidate in Ontario must pass before the Ontario College of Teachers will grant a certificate to teach. Introduced under the province's Ontario Regulation 271/19 and administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), the MPT measures whether new teachers have the everyday mathematical fluency they will need in any Ontario classroom, K–12 — not just the elementary grades.

    Why the MPT exists

    Ontario introduced the proficiency requirement to address a long-standing gap between teacher-education programs and the day-to-day math demands of teaching. The test is curriculum-aligned: every question maps back to a strand in the publicly available Ontario mathematics curriculum, so candidates are assessed on the same content they will eventually teach, model, and explain. Pedagogy questions — about how children develop mathematical reasoning — sit alongside the content questions because teaching math is as much about diagnosing thinking as it is about getting the right answer.

    Test format and structure

    The MPT is a computer-based test of roughly 60 multiple-choice questions delivered through a secure online proctoring environment. Candidates are given two and a half hours to complete the exam, and the questions are a mix of pure content items and applied scenarios drawn from real classroom situations — interpreting a student's work, identifying a misconception, or choosing the most effective representation of a concept. Most candidates report finishing comfortably within the time limit; pacing matters more than speed.

    The passing threshold is 70%, calculated across the full test rather than per strand. That means a strong performance in one area can offset a weaker area, but a candidate who is shaky across the board has no margin to recover. The score is reported as pass / fail along with a strand-level breakdown, so candidates who retake the test know exactly where to focus.

    The seven curriculum strands

    The MPT is organised around the seven strands of the Ontario mathematics curriculum. Each strand contributes questions to the test, and each is summarised below with a link to a dedicated practice page.

    Registration and scheduling

    Registration runs through the EQAO portal. Test windows are offered several times a year — typically in early fall, mid-winter, and late spring — and seats fill quickly in the weeks leading up to each window. Candidates choose a slot inside their window and complete the test remotely, with a live proctor watching by webcam. There is no cost for a first attempt; retakes are free but capped, so most candidates aim to pass within their first two sittings.

    Accommodations

    The MPT supports formal accommodations for documented disabilities — extended time, screen-reader compatibility, alternate test formats, and rest breaks. Requests are made through the EQAO at registration and should be submitted well ahead of the test window because supporting documentation can take time to gather. Candidates with English as an additional language do not currently receive language-specific accommodations, but the test is written in plain English with minimal idiomatic vocabulary.

    How to prepare

    Most candidates who fail the MPT report under-estimating the test on their first try. The mathematics itself is not advanced — it stops at about Grade 10 content — but the breadth across seven strands and the focus on applied reasoning trip up candidates who haven't done consistent practice. A useful baseline: aim for at least 20–30 hours of deliberate practice spread across four to six weeks, with a full mock exam in the final week to dial in pacing.
