    Geometry

    What this strand covers

    • Perimeter, area, surface area, and volume
    • Angle relationships in polygons and parallel lines
    • Transformations: translation, reflection, rotation, dilation
    • Properties of 2D and 3D shapes
    • Unit conversion within and between metric and imperial systems

    How Geometry shows up on the MPT

    Geometry on the MPT is more about measurement and spatial reasoning than formal proof. You will be asked to find the area of a composite shape, compute the volume of a rectangular prism, or identify the result of reflecting a figure across a given line.

    A common item type shows a labelled net of a 3D shape and asks for the surface area; another shows a scale drawing and asks for the real-world dimensions. The arithmetic is straightforward — the difficulty is in setting up the right calculation from a diagram, not executing it.

    Pedagogy questions in this strand often probe representation choices. Why might you choose pattern blocks over geoboards for introducing angle measure? Which manipulative best surfaces the relationship between area and perimeter?

    Common pitfalls

    • Confusing area and perimeter formulas under stress
    • Forgetting to square or cube units when converting (cm² vs cm³)
