    MPT Strand

    Number Sense

    Fractions, integers, decimals, ratios, and the relationships between them — typically the largest single strand on the Ontario MPT.

    What this strand covers

    • Operations with fractions, decimals, and integers
    • Place value and equivalent representations
    • Powers, exponents, and order of operations
    • Estimation, rounding, and reasonableness checks
    • Ratios, rates, and percent (overlaps with Proportional Reasoning)

    How Number Sense shows up on the MPT

    Number Sense is the strand where most candidates pick up — or lose — the largest share of marks on the MPT. The math itself is familiar from elementary and early-secondary school, but the test rewards fluency: knowing instantly that 3/8 is between 1/4 and 1/2, that 0.125 is one eighth, that a 25% discount followed by a 25% mark-up does not return the original price.

    Pedagogy questions sit on top of the pure content. You may be shown a student's work converting a fraction to a decimal and asked which misconception they are demonstrating, or asked to choose the best visual representation — a number line, an area model, or a fraction circle — for introducing equivalent fractions to a Grade 4 class.

    Practice should be split between speed drills on bare operations and longer scenario questions in which arithmetic is embedded inside a real classroom situation. Numera's Number Sense bank covers both ends.

    Common pitfalls

    • Treating mixed numbers like decimals (5 1/2 ≠ 5.12)
    • Forgetting to convert percents back to decimals before multiplying
    • Sign errors when subtracting a negative integer
