Ontario MPT — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ontario MPT?

The Ontario Mathematics Proficiency Test (MPT) is a mandatory examination for every teacher candidate in Ontario. It is administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) on behalf of the Ontario College of Teachers and must be passed before a teaching certificate is issued. The test covers seven curriculum strands of applied mathematics, K–10 in scope.

Who has to write the MPT?

All candidates seeking certification with the Ontario College of Teachers — including elementary, secondary, and French-as-a-second-language candidates — must pass the MPT. Internationally educated teachers applying for Ontario certification are subject to the same requirement.

How is the MPT scored?

The passing threshold is 70%, calculated across the whole test rather than per strand. Results are returned as pass / fail along with a strand-level breakdown so candidates who retake the test know exactly where to focus.

How long is the test?

Candidates have two and a half hours to complete roughly 60 multiple-choice questions, delivered through a secure online proctoring environment. Most candidates report finishing comfortably within the time limit.

How many strands does the MPT test?

Seven: Number Sense, Algebra, Geometry, Data & Probability, Financial Literacy, Proportional Reasoning, and Pedagogy. Number Sense is typically the largest single strand by question count.

How many times can I take the MPT?

Retakes are permitted but capped. Most candidates aim to pass within their first two attempts. There is no fee for a first attempt, and retake fees are minimal compared with private tutoring.

Are accommodations available?

Yes. The MPT supports extended time, screen-reader compatibility, alternate test formats, and rest breaks for documented disabilities. Requests are made through the EQAO at registration and should be submitted well ahead of the test window.

Is Numera free to use?

Yes. Numera is completely free, with no account required to access practice questions or full mock exams. There are no ads, no paywalls, and no upsells.

Does Numera work offline?

Yes. Numera is offline-first. Once the app has loaded once, it works without an internet connection — useful during commutes, in classrooms with restricted Wi-Fi, or anywhere with limited connectivity.

How many practice questions does Numera have?

Numera includes over 900 questions across all seven MPT strands, plus 12 full-length mock exams that mirror the real test's pacing, blueprint, and difficulty distribution.

Does Numera collect personal data?

No. Numera does not require an account and does not collect personally identifying information. Practice history is stored locally in your browser so your progress stays on your device.

Can teacher educators use Numera with their cohorts?

Yes. Numera is used by Faculty of Education programs across Ontario as a free supplementary resource. Because no accounts or personal data are involved, there is no privacy paperwork required to recommend it.
