What editors actually need from cloud storage
A working editor's storage problems look nothing like a consumer's. We read the posts. Here's what we found — and what we built.
The problem isn't storage — it's survival
When someone on r/editors writes "I'm working off a single 6 TB HDD knowing it was risky," they're not describing a minor inconvenience. They're describing a career-ending scenario they live with every day because the alternatives are either too expensive, too complicated, or too slow.
We scanned 11 creator subreddits — r/editors, r/videography, r/Filmmakers, r/photography, r/VideoEditing, and others — and read the top 125 storage-related pain points by relevance. Seven themes kept repeating.
"Where do I put terabytes of finished work?"
Every 4K camera shoot adds hundreds of gigabytes. A year of event photography hits 10 TB. Filmmakers describe sitting on 20 to 90 TB of archived projects with no clear plan for where it all goes once the edit is done. Consumer clouds top out at 2 TB or get expensive fast. Local drives fill up and stack up. The footage just piles.
"I'm one drive failure from losing everything"
Backup terror is the most emotionally charged theme in the data. Editors describe working off a single external HDD with no redundancy. Photographers ask "is there no decent backup solution?" after a colleague loses a decade of work. The fear is constant, but most backup tools either assume you have 50 GB of documents or require a sysadmin to configure.
"Cloud gets expensive at scale"
Editors call out egress fees by name. LucidLink, Backblaze, Google Drive — once you pass a few terabytes, the monthly bill becomes a real line item. "Affordable cloud for 20 TB" is a search that leads nowhere useful. The pain isn't just the cost — it's the opacity. You can't make a good storage decision if you can't see what each provider is actually charging you.
"My photo library is a complete mess"
Photographers describe 100,000+ photos across devices, Lightroom subscriptions they can't justify, duplicates everywhere, no way to consolidate without downloading everything to a laptop first. Their files are scattered across so many places that finding anything takes longer than taking the photo did.
"How should I structure my project folders?"
The unglamorous cousin of every other storage problem. Editors want best practices for event footage. Production companies want a standard file-structure template. Musicians want their sessions and stems organized. Nobody wants to invent a system from scratch, and existing options are either too rigid or nonexistent.
"I need to get files to the client"
This pain is unique to creators — it never appeared in our consumer research. Editors need to deliver raw files to clients. Production companies need file sharing and client review workflows that don't require everyone on the same VPN. The demand ranges from "send a 50 GB folder" to "multi-editor remote setup with LucidLink and Iconik." Getting files out is as hard as keeping them in.
"I edit on the road and need my files to follow me"
Photographers uploading from hotel Wi-Fi. Editors switching between Windows at the studio and Mac at home. The files need to be reachable from anywhere without syncing everything to every device — which, at 10+ TB, isn't an option.

What we haven't shipped yet
A few things still missing, listed because overclaiming is worse than underpromising:
- Client review and sign-off flow — the backend exists, the UI is next.
- Project folder templates — smart folders organize what exists, but scaffolding a standard structure for a new shoot is still manual.
- Photo experience layer — we move and dedupe photos, but face recognition and auto-albums aren't built yet.
