How to pass the Ontario MPT: a 2026 guide

The Math Proficiency Test came back as a certification requirement on February 1, 2025. If you're a teacher candidate in Ontario, passing it is mandatory before you earn your certificate. Here's what's actually on it and how to prepare.

What the MPT really is

The MPT is a standardized assessment of two things: your understanding of math content from the Ontario Grade 3–9 curriculum, and your understanding of math pedagogy — how to teach, assess, and adapt instruction. The test runs about two hours, computer-based, multiple choice. Math is roughly 70% of the questions; pedagogy is the other 30%. You need 70% in each section independently to pass, so a strong math score alone won't save you.

The math is genuinely Grade 9 level. There's no calculus, no trigonometry, no university-level theory. If you can comfortably handle EQAO Grade 9 math questions, you can handle the MPT math.

What math is actually on it

The math section covers four Ontario curriculum strands. The breakdown is roughly even, with a slight tilt toward the strands you'd be expected to teach most often.

Number Sense and Numeration covers whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, and the operations and word-problems that combine them. Most candidates underestimate this strand because it "feels easy" and end up making careless errors on percentage word problems specifically.

Measurement and Geometry covers area, volume, perimeter, angles, basic shapes, spatial reasoning, and the Pythagorean theorem. Drawing the diagram before you solve the problem is the single biggest score-protector in this strand.

Patterning and Algebra is mostly linear relationships in y = mx + b form, solving for x, and pattern recognition. If you remember slope and y-intercept, you have most of what's tested.

Data Management and Probability covers reading graphs and tables, mean/median/mode, and basic probability. The skill the MPT actually tests here is reading comprehension applied to data — slow down, parse the table, then compute.

What's in the pedagogy section

The pedagogy section is where strong-math candidates often lose ground, because it's the part you can't intuit. It tests your familiarity with three Ontario documents and how they apply.

Growing Success is the canonical Ontario document on assessment, evaluation, and reporting. The most-tested concepts are the achievement charts (the four categories), the difference between assessment for learning, as learning, and of learning, and the distinction between assessment and evaluation. Read it. Take notes.

Learning for All is the differentiated-instruction document. The most-tested concepts are Universal Design for Learning, the difference between accommodations and modifications, and the IEP process. The MPT loves scenario-based pedagogy questions, and most of them map back to one of these distinctions.

The Ontario Math Curriculum document for Grades 1–9 is the third leg. You don't need to memorize every expectation, but you should understand the structure (strands, grades, expectations) and recognize Grade-9-level expectations specifically.

How to actually prepare

Start with the official OCT practice test. Don't skip this — it shows you the format and surfaces your weak areas faster than any prep guide can. Spend two focused hours on it, untimed, no calculator. Then grade yourself by strand.

If it's been a few years since you did this math, the next step is a foundation refresh. Khan Academy's Grade 9 math track is free and covers all four strands. Don't try to "do it all" — go to the strand the diagnostic flagged as weakest and spend 60 minutes a day there until you feel a real shift.

While the math foundation is rebuilding, work the pedagogy documents in parallel. Growing Success and Learning for All are dense but readable in two evenings each. Focus on the terminology — make flashcards for every term you don't immediately recognize. The pedagogy section is mostly a vocabulary test wearing a scenario costume.

The last week is mocks. Take at least two full timed practice tests under simulated conditions: no phone, no notes, on-screen calculator only, full two hours. Review every wrong answer carefully — note the pattern of your mistakes, not just the individual ones. If you keep getting fraction problems wrong in a specific way, drill that pattern.

Free resources worth your time

The official MPT website at mathproficiencytest.ca has the official practice test and the test framework — both free after registration. EQAO publishes released Grade 9 assessments which are the closest open material to actual MPT content. Khan Academy's Grade 9 math is free and well-structured for foundation review.

The five test-day habits that protect your score

Read every word. MPT questions often include extra information to test whether you can identify what matters. Slow down on the first read.

Manage time. You have roughly 80 seconds per question. If something is taking more than 90 seconds, flag it and move on. You can come back.

Flag and return. Don't waste five minutes on the hardest question on the test. Flag it, finish the easier ones, then return with whatever time is left.

Check units. Especially in measurement questions — cm vs cm² matters more than you'd think, and the test will absolutely give you both options.

Stay calm. The math is Grade 9 level. The pedagogy is documented. You've prepared. Trust it.

A few questions that come up

How hard is the MPT? Honestly: not as hard as the anxiety suggests. The math is Grade 9. Most candidates who actually review the content pass on their first attempt. The candidates who fail are usually the ones who didn't review pedagogy.

What score do I need to pass? OCT doesn't publish exact passing scores. Aim for 70%+ in each section independently and you're safely past the line.

Can I retake it? Yes. There's no limit on attempts. Retakes happen in subsequent test windows.

Online or in-person? Both options exist. Remote testing is proctored online; in-person testing happens at designated centres. Choose what suits your environment better.

How long is the certification valid? Indefinitely once you pass.
